Civil Weddings and Religious Weddings in Cyprus

For your wedding in Cyprus, you have two options, as in the UK; a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony. Before either ceremony can take place, you and your partner need to apply in person to the Marriage Officer at the Municipal or Town Hall in the area in which you are getting married. The Officer will issue one of two types of Licence; a Special Licence that allows couples to marry after being resident for three working days, or a Normal Licence, which requires that the wedding takes place fifteen days after the Notice of Marriage was submitted. A Special Licence will cost CY£75, a Normal Licence CY£165.

Legal Documents for Weddings in Cyprus

You will need to bring some legal documents with you from the UK, although exactly which documents do vary from district to district, so check in advance. For both bride and groom, the list of documents will usually include:
• A valid passport, with more than six months left before it expires
• Your full birth certificate
• A confirmation of your single status, known as a Certificate of Celibacy, which should be stamped and signed by a solicitor
• Written consent from your parents, if you are aged under 18.

To be married in an Anglican ceremony, either the bride or groom must have a Baptism Certificate, and for a Catholic service, both bride and groom must have a Baptism Certificate. In addition, you should consult with the local priest to sort out any other arrangements that need to be made. Your Marriage Bans will also need to be posted in advance of your wedding; in the UK, these are posted 14 days before your wedding. All ceremonies are conducted in English.

After your wedding ceremony, you will be given a Certificate of Marriage by the Marriage Officer, and a copy of this Certificate will also be sent to the UK Embassy in Cyprus.
